Mac OSX, IMHO, with its relation to the Unix/Linux OS, is the greatest OS ever put on the market.. Now with the past version of Mac OS, I thought 7.1 and 8.1 were stable.. but they are out of date now..

Support for open standards? Check.
Awarded most secure server OS? Check.
Fastest PDF viewer in the world? Check.

sovietpower: I do like Linux, but if anyone gets a Mac with OS X and wants to replace it... I think you know where this is heading, no need to repeat the previous posts

Macs are just all in one machines.. I can't wait intill one of these days when I have the money to get a mac powerbook, I could have my world of linux, windows, and my favorite Apple world all on one machine..

Is VirtualPC all they make it out to be?

VP sort of is, if you use the heavy duty RAM/CPU. Other then that it will be slow. But I have made a point of converting completely to Mac with no regrets.

Before anyone gets confused, he is not saying that all Mac hardware is all in one (the PowerMacs and servers aren't). He is talking about running software for many platforms (Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, *nix, Windows, and Java) all with OS X.

Sadly, VirtualPC is not all they make it out to be. Currently it doesn't run on G5-based Macs and is very slow becuase it must emulate a completely different processor (PCs use i86/CISC while Macs use PPC/RISC). It won't let you play modern Windows games but it is good for using the occasional Windows only app (as long as it is not CPU-intensive).

macs are basically all the power of linux/unix without any of the hassle of having to look for supported hardware or spending ages setting it up

Still you get enough with a mac that is is worth the money, and I would own another mac if I had the money. Even if it was a old mac I would be happy.. There is nothing wrong with OS 9.1 or 9.0 or even 8.1..

I went to the VirtualPC site, and I guess they make it sound more then it really is.. I have had some peolple say its great, and some people say it sucks.. I don't know, since I have never used it..

It seems it depends what you wanna run from M$. I think people are too dependent on M$ apps. It is nice of Apple to try to make these run on people's new Macs, but IMHO the simple answer is just to use the Mac equivalent. They work just as well, they just do it differently. I see nothing bad about that. I don't even use old Apple apps that need to run in OS 9.

Any G3-based Mac can run OS X, even the old G3 iMacs (and clamshell iBooks) which are fairly cheap these days. They'll just run OS X slowly.
