Originally posted by cav Anybody know how to start kde without the kicker? Also, how do I find the pid of the kicker? When i do a ps -A it doesnt show up.
maybe use #top
then press "U" then type the username that is using KDE, see if "Kicker" is listed, and kill it (press K, then the PID number, then "9")
I've tried starting Kde without the kicker. I've even made scripts to kill the kicker at startup.
The problem I had was that it also takes out the menu popup when you click on the big K and any external taskbars you've made. Minimizing apps REALLY minimizes them. They freaking dissapear. I'm also sure there are some other little things associated with kicker that killing would screw over
If you can live with all that just make a script to kill it at start.

Just a question, if you are not using (or liking) kicker, then why are you using KDE? The primary reason for me using KDE was that i like having a taskbar at the bottom, and all the quicklaunchers as well.
If you don't like kicker, then try using Windowmaker, it is graphically just as good as KDE (or can be made like that, to be more precise) and is nice and fast and light.
I like using Superkaramba which works very well in Kde since it's a Kde app. Kroller and Slicker are just nicer and more customizable replacements for kicker. Kicker hasn't been modified in a long time.

I've been a Linux user for a couple of months now, and I think it's going to stay on my hd. Haven't quite grasped the full potential of Linux yet (say n00b), but you sure can make it look nice
