The 5500 seems to suck 3D-performance-wise, however. Or it could be my mobo & RAM. Oh well, I'll know for sure when I return this card and get a more expensive one.

Bitstream Vera Sans @ 96 dpi with full hinting (AA) and the freetype autohinter enabled. I also set the nVidia "Image Sharpening" to 2.0, but I don't think that the resulting font changes can be seen in the screenshot.

Yep, it was the card; the 5500 sucks. Badly. Despite it having 256MB of VRAM and being overclocked out of the box.
Fortunately, the PNY GeForce 5700 Personal Cinema with 128MB of VRAM kicks its ass in ten directions at once without breaking a sweat. For only $50 more. Now I can play UT2004 online in Linux without embarassing myself.
Hereīs some info about my screenshot. There is no karamba or gdesklets Itīs enlightenment 16 (cvs version) with Engage on the bottom (the mac os x style bar). On the right corner, you can see eRSS. And in the middle there is Entrance (Entrance -T mode).
Engage/eRSS/Entrance are e17 programs. They are all current CVS versions. (they are under heavy development and have not been released yet)
PS: What is the problem with Engage in e16? It should work perfectly. Actually it does not work in e17 correctly atm because there is no fake transparency support in e17 (however, you can fool it with using Esetroot...)
Also about e17 pre5, you should get the newest version from CVS. Itīs currently pre10. I donīt know what changes there are but there should be many
If anyone is interested in E17 things (please read the disclaimer @ the guide - they have not been officially released yet and are not supported in any way and do not represent what the final e17 release), check:http://lude.net/edocs/ (me and some other guys from freenode IRC #edocumentation have written that site)
vlrn, thanks for all the info. I tried compiling all the e17 libs with a version of 16.7 already installed. Maybe I need to build all the libs first and then install the rest of 16 from CVS. Who knows. I guess a bit more research is in order. I may have to try out pre10, but if you can get most of the e17 apps running on 16 CVS, I may as well stick with that since it sounds a bit more functional. From all the info provided on your site, I may actually be able to get 16 running the way I want it to. Thanks again.
