Commodore with Linux

I want it bad! I love the clicking of old style keyboards.

This video is pretty cool: http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_OS_Vision.aspx

Wow, no responses! I am so excited that Commodore is coming back, and is embracing Linux as their OS. I guess I will be excited alone. :-(

Well, the C64 was a great machine back in time and Commodore built ground-breaking computers, but except the case and a blueish theme for Gnome this has nothing to do with it. If I look at the price tags (they want 349$ only for the case, 999$ for a simple Atom-based machine, I can build 3-4 of it for the same price) it seems just to be a desperate try to make money out of a classical design.

The form of this machine is interesting. I'm not aware of another modern desktop system which has the computer and keyboard in one unit separate from the monitor.

It is a bit pricey, but some will pay it. I'm tempted.

Pretty much what I think of it as well. Though I wasnt a huge fan of the C64...

For those sort of prices, dont bother with a C64.

IBM model 'M' keyboards are still avaible...and if you get one of them, you arent buying overpriced, 'low end' hardware. Bonus advantage is that the model 'M's are virtually unbreakable, easy to fix if they do break, and not a single piece 'case/keyboard' design that means you are stuck with using the supplied internal components.

I'm pretty sure that at least some AMD geode systems had a similar 'computer guts hidden in the keyboard' design.

I think /General in general needs to lighten up…criticism tends to put a dampener on fun.

I could go on about critical thought and its apparent mutual exclusivity with "having fun", but I won't drag /General deeper into the proverbial philosophical sh*thole…

For nostalgia I would go that way, not buying an overpriced desktop PC.

Overpriced? $500.00 for a Commodore 1571 floppy disk drive? I've got at least three of them in my basement right now.

People who would buy this new C64 don't want the original C64; who could live within those constraints these days? Anyone can install VICE and make a desktop theme at no cost. All they want is the name, unique form factor, and the nostalgia.

'Lighten up'? I might wear that from syg00, but not you Mr 'determinism' Code. If you actually believed what you harp on about, you wouldnt make 'lighten up 'comments anyway.

Its a hell of a lot to pay for a name, someone wants to make a lot of money from some badge engineering.

Its hardly a 'unique form factor'-

http://www.cybernetman.com/en/all-in...oard-pc/ZPC-D5

I'm pretty sure that the above 'keyboard PC' is the same basic setup they used with the geode systems.

I like it, I'd get it if they sold 'em for like $99 but no way for their asking price. I know they were selling some "commodore minis" at a store near my work a few months ago for about that price and they sold like hotcakes but they're no longer available I sure would've got one.

Did I actually hear you say, "Challenge accepted!"

Nifty! Thanks for the link. Now I can't say it is unique any more.

I think the majority of members here, including me, are aware of commodore but never used it. I'm glad it's using linux but I'm not a fan of all-in-one type computers.

If they lower the price that is reasonable...maybe I might consider one. Maybe...

That is wishful thinking on the seller's part. They are more valuable than the 1541, but still only worth about $50 in working condition, maybe $100 if it is mint condition in the box. The ones in your basement would be in the untested and unknown category, around $10-20 each.

You'll see stuff like that on eBay all the time, especially with old, potentially collectible stuff. Sometimes I wonder what makes them think it is worth that, but I don't waste my time asking them.

Keep in mind that when I'm writing those "all is predetermined, there's nothing we can do about it" posts, it's usually in the morning, and I'm in a rather foul mood, so things tend to set me off on existential tangents easier. …that's getting off-topic, though.

My little comment about the criticism was serious, though. I probably wouldn't bother getting one of those machines, either, even if I had the money, but I have different reasons (mostly that I've never even used an original C64; it's older than I am, so there would be no nostalgic value in it for me ). All I'm saying is that if someone wants to spend their hard-earned cash on one of these "new" Commodore machines, by all means they should go for it; it's their money.
