Slow FC3 after upgrade from FC1
Well, this seems to be pretty par for the course from what I'm reading on the forums here, but feel free to chime in with any advice before I wipe my machine and install from scratch:
Machine:
generic P3 800 Mhz
512 Mb RAM
40 Gb HardDrive
Generic SB Soundcard
I've been running FC1 for the last year.. I loved it... installed with no problems very stable, quick even with all of the default services running, had minimal tweaking etc: Enter Fedora Core 3:
The machine is now basically slow... very slow... I've disabled all "unecessary" services. When I click on mozilla (or any other application), I can walk away grab a coke and the thing is still loading. Clicking from link to link is a chore for the machine. Forget about running Java in the browser... the browser locks and then ends up killing itself after a long long time. It chokes so bad, I can't even telnet into the thing from elsewhere to try to kill the process. In most cases, I am forced to press the reset button. All of this is under Gnome. Switching to KDE is a _little_ better but not much. Applications load a little faster, but I still have the mozilla java locking problem or I should just say Mozilla/Konquerer problem since the same thing happens in Konquerer as well indicating there could be a java problem. Since I don't know if this behavior is related to upgrading from fc1 to fc3, I basically feel forced to wipe the machine and install fc3 from scratch. I am a little apprehensive to do this since my fear is that I will go ahead with the install and just have the same problems. If so, I may just go back to Fedora 1 or try another distro. I've already backed up all of my important files in preparation for a wipe but I'm checking here first to see if anyone can give me any tips to help speed things up before I do it.
