Grey/Junk screen problem with Fedora Core 3

I just recently installed Fedora Core 3 on my computer. Initially I had problems with a grey/junk screen after the installation prompt. I tried using the prompt "linux nofb" at the boot screen, and that seemed to fix the problem. However, once I rebooted the machine I was presented with the same grey screen. I was able to sign in to Fedora and see the desktop. But many of the icons and menu items are invisible until I scroll over them. I tried decreasing color depth and resolution, but to no avail. A friend told me that this could be a RAM issue. Is it? Or is it somthing else?
How do I fix this???

did you select a session (example KDE)

Just to be sure, the default session is kind of a junk grey session where the terminal window is small compared to background (possibly grey).

No

No, this is not one of the default screens. It's really full of crap. THe real problem is that my menus are invisible unless I scroll over them!
