Blank Screen Problem with X server in Fedora Core 1 is driving me crazy!!!

I am using Fedora Core 1.

I have grub as my bootloader and my default runlevel is 5. i.e. i directly boot into runlevel 5. Now during startup "sometimes" the X server starts and everything works fine, but "sometimes" it won't start and i would get only a blank screen. I restart and again "sometimes" it works and at other times a get again oly a blank screen.

Then i tried booting into runlevel 3 and typed startx from there. It worked fine for quite some time but again i started experiencing the same problems.

I hate this "sometimes" stuff either it should work all the time or it shouldn't work all the time Operating Systems are deterministic aren't they??

I also noticed one more thing :
I have grub bootloader. The bootloader screen shows :

Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)

I press 'e' and i get

root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ hdd=ide-ssci rhgb
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl.img

I press 'e' again to edit the second line and remove the hdd=ide-ssci rhgb part. So i now have :

root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/
initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl.img

Now i restart the computer and the X works fine. But my cdwriter would not work.Doing any operation on /mnt/cdrom1 gives an error message : /mnt/cdrom1 is not a valid block device I can though eject it using 'eject /dev/hdd' but i don't know hoe to access its contents?

Why is this happening coz this has now forced me to reinstall Fedora Core 1 a couple of times on my system

This X server behaviour has frustrated me a lot

Please Help

My system specifications are :
P4 2A Ghz processor.
Intel 845 chipset motherboard.
On board Intel 845 video card.
256 MB of RAM
Distro : Fedora Core 1

Also :

Primary Master : My Samsung Hardisk
Primary Slave : None
Secondry Master : Samsung CD ROM
Secondry Slave : Samsung CD Writer

Thanx in anticipation

I'm not sure about your problem, but i noticed the following:

- scsi-emulation for cd-writer: hdd=ide-scsi (type repeated twice in your post: ssci)

- you disabled the last two boot parameters, why not just leave out the rhgb thing? Does it change anything? I don't have fedore, but it sounds as if it is only a graphical display for the boot process?! It should do you no harm to omit it.

- if this doesn't work: when googleing for "rhgb" i came across a usenet posting, that might else be interesting. There is something about the root=LABEL=/ you use in your grub configuration file and replacing it with the proper name (/dev/hdd or maybe /dev/sd0 I guess for the cd-writer with scsi-emulation). In case you want to have a look at it -- no guarantee that it helps:

At last somebody answered ..............................

Thanks a lot titopoquito . Your suggestion to remove only the "rhgb" parameter worked fine. Now i can boot with runlevel 5 without any problems and my CD Writer is also working properly.

Sorry for that "ssci" thing. It was an error on my part it was actually "scsi" as you had mentioned

The link you gave me was also helpful.

Also could you please view another problem i am facing with my X server :

I got no replies for this thread. But this is also one of the major problems i am facing with my X server. Maybe you could help?

(I guess this is not against the forum rules?)

Thanks a lot again. You've saved me a lot of trouble.
