Slackware-14.1-Intrusion Detection

Posted 06-22-2014 at 09:49 PM by arniekat

A very important part of Security is also the Integrity of your system and being able to detect when your system components have been maliciously compromised by a person or an organization. Some useful tools to think about for Integrity/Verification are Aide, Chkrootkit, Rkhunter, and Tiger security scripts. Lynis is more of a tool to check the security settings of your system, but I find it useful.

Download and compile the following from SlackBuilds.org and from Slacky.eu:

Slackware-14.1-Firefox-24.6.0

Posted 06-22-2014 at 06:59 PM by arniekat

This tutorial will go through speeding up and hardening Mozilla Firefox 24.6.0, which is the current version from the patches directory. Since Web Browsers and other Network-Aware Applications communicate with the outside world, it makes sense to spend time locking down/hardening these applications. Some of this information is elsewhere on my blog, but I decided to put it in one place along with updated information. You do not have to do everything in this tutorial. Select what you need/want....

Slackware-14.1-Firewalls

Posted 06-22-2014 at 06:55 PM by arniekat

This tutorial will go through some of the choices you have for Software Firewalls. Along with firewalls, you can make various networking and system settings changes to your running kernel by placing various settings in /etc/sysctl.conf. Some other firewall configuration tools available are: Shorewall and FirewallBuilder, but I have not used them myself and are not shown here.

SYSCTL.CONF

This file controls kernel settings and does not exist in a Slackware default installation....

Slackware-14.1-Sysctl.conf

Posted 06-22-2014 at 06:54 PM by arniekat

This file is set up for a Slackware 14.1 Desktop Machine. The only sysctl variables enabled are the ones that need to be changed from the standard Slackware settings. It is in the bottom section.

You can copy the bottom portion as /etc/sysctl.conf and change the permissions:

chown root:root /etc/sysctl.conf
chmod 0440 /etc/sysctl.conf

NOTE - If you use the firewall script from Slax-7.0.8 as /etc/rc.d/rc.firewall be sure that it does not have sysctl...

Gwenview > Gthumb

Posted 06-22-2014 at 03:01 AM by the dsc (linux-related notes)
Updated 06-22-2014 at 09:10 PM by the dsc (update)

I don't like much the "thumbnails only" mode that both these viewers/managers enforce, in the old days you could have a file list that you could alternate between various views, including thumbnails, and a preview pane. But these days we're almost forced to chose between the two, even though Geeqie isn't all that bad.

But Gwenview is absurdly superior in some basic editing, namely cropping and resizing. While editing files with about 2000x2000 px or so, Gthumb kept accessing/writing...
