Is it possible? If it is, it's not obvious in any way, nor documented in the manual.

I think that would be an interesting feature if it currently lacks it. I don't really know, but I think it wouldn't be so much of a huge thing to implement the possibility of running commands such as "openbox-command menu-id-whatever" to make a given menu pop-up; or "openbox-command nexdesktop" so a script could move the view to a different desktop (but perhaps it can be done with...

compacting a VirtualBox Windows storage container

Posted 10-19-2011 at 09:47 PM by neonsignal

After a Windows client has been used inside VirtualBox for some time (particularly if large files have been removed), it can be useful to compact the storage container image (VDI) by removing unused space.

When changing network cards, or moving drives to a new computer, the network interfaces will be assigned new names (eth0, eth1, etc). This is so that the interfaces will retain their names between boots but not clash with other interfaces (on the assumption that the old ones may be only temporarily missing). However, if the new interface is a replacement for the old one, it is often more convenient to reuse the same name that the old one had.

These interface names are configured in...

using Skype

Posted 10-19-2011 at 05:09 AM by neonsignal

To installl skype on Debian, the following repository can be added to /etc/apt/sources.list:
dep stable non-free
It is then installed:
apt-get install skype
In order to get the camera to work, I found I had to force the use of the v4l1compat library when invoking skype, ie:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/ skype

sharing the cpu

Posted 10-17-2011 at 08:57 AM by caieng

Today's post was supposed to be a comparison, using the internet radio station benchmark test, previously described on this forum, of two new distributions: Lubuntu and Xubuntu.

However, in running the tests during the past week, I discovered something unexpected.

Windows XP and Linux have very different methods of assigning weight to particular tasks.

At first, I had thought that XP was faster than Linux, as I have previously written here, but now,...
