SUSE Linux 9.2 was released October 25, 2004.

Novell's influence grew more visible in this release, with SUSE being described as a "Novell Business" in the wallpaper. Many users found Novell's influence off-putting, especially in some of their intellectual property agreements in years to come.

GNOME and KDE saw version bumps. There are visible tweaks to the GNOME and KDE themes. OpenOffice.org surprisingly integrates with KDE's theming. Firefox is still in pre-release....

Novell takes over: SUSE Linux 9.1 in VirtualBox

Updated Today at 10:40 PM by wagscat123

SUSE Linux 9.1 was released on April 23, 2004. This is the first release after Novell purchased SUSE. Novell was in early pioneer in local area networks for computers and had lost significant ground in its traditional products to Microsoft by the early 2000s. Attempting to refocus its portfolio, Novell purchased Ximian, a company that developed a customized GNOME experience, and SUSE around the same time. Ximian's and Novell's focus on the desktop characterize the next few years of development....

SUSE Linux 9.0 in VirtualBox

Posted Today at 09:56 PM by wagscat123
Updated Today at 10:20 PM by wagscat123

SUSE Linux 9.0 was released October 15, 2003. Digging through the Wayback Machine web archives, this appears to be the first release when SUSE became all capitalized in both the company's name and the distribution's name.

In KDE, the separate button to access various system tools on the panel disappeared, leaving just the KDE main menu. For whatever reason the GNOME icon set and theme totally changed. OpenOffice.org saw a minor feature version upgrade to 1.1, not showing any dramatic...

SuSE Linux 8.2 in VirtualBox

Posted Today at 09:39 PM by wagscat123
Updated Today at 09:57 PM by wagscat123

SuSE Linux 8.2 was released April 7, 2003.

KDE and GNOME both saw version bumps to version 3.1 and 2.2, respectively. KDE visually doesn't appear much different, spare a theme change in the title bars and the new Crystal/Karamik theme making its way into YaST. GNOME returns to one panel after switching to a 2 panel set up in GNOME 2.0, and completely changes default theme. OpenOffice.org doesn't seem to have had a major upgrade. Most notably, this is the first release of SuSE Linux...

SuSE Linux 8.1 in VirtualBox

Updated Today at 09:41 PM by wagscat123

SuSE Linux 8.1 was released September 30, 2002.

It brought with it several new features. The venerable GNOME 2 debuted in this release. GNOME 2.0 saw a new look and feel for GNOME, and simplified several features. Some components such as the Terminal saw a complete re-write, and Metacity became the window manager. GNOME would not have a major new release series for almost another decade, until the controversial redesign of GNOME 3.0. Today's MATE desktop environment is a continuation...
