Ubuntu with Macintosh

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking alot about buying a MacBook Pro sometime in the near future and was just wondering how Ubuntu performs on these types of machines. How does it handle the hardware? Are 'drivers' easy to come by for these machines or is it going to have to be built?

UPDATE:
I found a good page through Linux On Laptops that explains it all and guides you through all the steps needed. Linux on MacBook Pro. It would be nice if someone could find out how to get the sound to work in Linux.

Just one question that leaves me confused... Because of the new Intel chips, do I need the Mac version of the CD or the PC version???

Thanks folks, you guys ('n gals) are always a great help and I've directed alot of people over the past while to this site for help
xD

I guess you need the i386 CD.

The PPC version is for computers with a PowerPC chip, like Powerbooks and iBooks.

The Ubuntu CD is a livecd, so you can try it out without installing it to make sure it works properly.

LINUX & Intel iMac

Hi,

I've tried LINUX on a Intel iMac, but did not succeed because the boot loader I installed wanted me to upgrade the firmware, and it was not my iMac to mess with. So, it seems old Firmwares, no go, new Firmware it seems works.

PS. The Live CD of Ubuntu 6.06 did not even boot. The Mac did not see it as a bootable CD at all.

Because you didn't hold C when starting your mac, I assume?

Hay,

Did hold down C. Did every thing I found on the Internet to do to get Ubuntu to load on the Intel Mac. No go. The boot loader I installed spelled it out: firmware version.

But it still seems that the sound drivers in general is an issue for LINUX on MAC. Rather stick to PC then.
