Code:
checking build system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking host system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-pc-linux-gnu
ie. what I understood to mean compiled for i686.
But maybe
Code:
checking for ld used by gcc... /usr/i586-suse-linux/bin/ld
checking if the linker (/usr/i586-suse-linux/bin/ld) is GNU ld... yes
checking for /usr/i586-suse-linux/bin/ld option to reload object files... -r
means that it is being compiled for i586. I don't know. That part normally flies by too quickly for me to see.
Your little joke wasn't particularly funny.
If you beleived that the compilation from source wasn't the reason for the increase in speed, you could have just said so. That way you share information in a way that contributes and builds up. I wouldn't get pissed off, and I would now have a better understanding of how the compile process works. Instead you chose to display your "superior knowledge" in a way that mocks my understanding of linux. That's really nice. I even said in my post:
Quote:
maybe just cos I compiled from source, I don't know.

See that, I confess my lack of true understanding. That's where you could have come in and said something like
Quote:
No. Suse compiles KDE from source as well and it is already compiled for the i586 architecture and unless you compiled with your own rpm macros and custom gcc flags you have not compiled for your architecture. All you have done is compiled for i586 using the default gcc flags shipped with Suse.

Then I would have thought you were a really helpful guy instead of being pissed off with you.
I thought the whole point of Linuxquestions was to come together as a community and to support and encourage each other. Now maybe I'm being an overly-sensitive whiny little bastard (probably, but you live in SA, and the taxis on the way home make my blood boil, so maybe you know where I'm coming from...)but if I wanted people to make sarcastic responses to my posts I'd be in a Windows forum.
