Problems with KDE 3.2.3 Compile (Suse 9)

I was sort of bored for the past few days, so I figured I'd try out the new KDE. I went and downloaded
konstruct, configured it to my liking, and ran it. It took a while, but it finished
without any errors. I ran the commands like it said (all export something = <dir>
now everything still works and all, just kde 3.2.3 will not startup, for one it is
not showing up in the menu of what I want to start at the logon menu (just an annoyance)
anyway, when I go and try to run the command "startkde" from the command prompt
(after killing X) it gives me errors...basically saying unable to open display.
and complains about it a few times...also saying it cannot connect to X server.
then aborts.

I didn't skip a step according to the readme and it should be working...

btw, I'm running suse 9 pro, and I installed kde into ~/kde3.2.3

::hopes for reply...had to post this in lynx just to get errors::

EXACT ERRORS:
xsetroot: unable to open display ''

ksmserver: cannot connect to X server
startkde: Shutting down...

Did you try startx? The ~/.xinitrc script should have a line that reads "exec startkde" so when you issue startx it will start KDE for you.
