i tried claws-mail and sylpheed, i could get my mail no problem, but i couldnt get the changes i made (deleted messages, archived messages) to reflect on the gmail server. so when i checked my email on my phone, the messages were all messed up, and i was rereading mail, which got irritating. my solution was to stop checking email on my computer, now i do it exclusively from my phone. thunderbird and claws/sylpheed were the only ones ive tried, if anyone has a different suggestion (which is also lightweight) i would be interested in this as well.

I use fetchmail to collect gmail. I then read it in mutt. Not had one problem.

mutt is by far the best thing you can use to handle your mail. Powerful and configurable, although it take some time to configure it and get use to it.

Claws mail user here too.
Handles 2 of my Gmail accounts, some other POP3 accounts, Gmane, RSS Feeds, and text based NNTP groups I follow.

I do not use Claws with Gmail's IMAP though. Claws is seriously slow (IMO ) with Gmail's IMAP implementation. Gmail does some funky stuff with IMAP. Gmail and POP3 works fabulous. There's a few postings on the Claws mailing list about Claws mail and Gmail's IMAP. http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.mai....general/46795

george, let us/me know what you think of claws after you use it for a while. How does it handle html mail, etc. I'm really curious

I use mutt, fetchmail, procmail, lbdb, and abook.

Why don't you try it?
Only you can decide if you like it or not.

Kind regards

Well, I used it extensively today (received about 47 emails and send 14). My blackberry shares my gmail mailbox with claws and the two played nice.

It definitely works as advertised and I see myself using it as my default email client on this machine

Thanks george.
I was just curious how you liked it so far
I've used all that have been mentioned plus more than I can remember in the past 25 yrs.
