That is dwm bstack patch...for email i use python script with conky piping to dzen2. Yes, you can use mailcheck script with conky in xfce...

Edit: you can use tmux for spliting terminal if you don't have tiling wm http://www.dodaj.rs/f/29/bi/2OWH2D7q/tmux.png

Reminds me of terminator. I love it because I can have multiple terminals within one window.
