slackware9.1 sound configuration

I have been doing some researching about getting my sound working. I get the impression that this is going to be more of a challenge then getting my X working. I have an integrated AC97 soundcard. I have noticed a lot said about alsa drivers, are they the logical way to go? does using the modprobe command load the module(I am not sure what a module is) that I need to use sound. Any help would be appreciated .

<my 1st post here>

im using slackware9.1/fluxbox/via8233 modules by default (full-install),
at /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

amixer set Master 22 unmute
amixer set PCM 22 unmute
amixer set CD 22 unmute
amixer set Surround 22 unmute

if volume is mute, run "alsamixer", and up master, cd, surround or what you want, eh.... press M to unMute.

my xmms was listeing 05-charlie_brown_jr-hoje-lb.mp3
(6.01mb/4:22/192kbps/joint stereo) very well..

I will be honest, that does not make much sence to me. I need to research what you said, then maybe I will understand better. Pretty new to linux, bran new to slack. Thank you for your response.

I love my slackware, I know this is the distro for me!

I tried installing alsa but I did not have good sound in games (such as unreal) so I removed it from loading. I have had the best luck just loading the soundcore module, the via 82c686 module, and letting hotplug load those at bootup. It loads the ac97_codec module along with it and my sound is perfect. I think that is a generic via 82cxx driver as well, because it loads as via82cxx therefore it should work with any ac97 card.
