Hi I just installed fedora core one on my dell dimension 8250 and I have a sound blaster live sound card but i can't get any sound on my computer. When I try to make the computer detect it it says that there is no sound device. I don't know what to do it is very confusing so if somebody could give me easy instructions and maybe a website that could help me configure this please. Thanks.

There are some cards in Dell that run with software, like winmodems. You may have one of those. I have never seen them but I have read about them. If it is built into the mobo, you may need a card. If it is a seprate card, there may be hope.

Any details on what you have tried so far? And also, make SURE you unmute the thing. It needs to be unmuted in two places usually. I'm not sure why Mandrake does that. Kmix is one of them. I can't remember what the other is.

What is the PCI ID? PCI ID 1102:0006 is for the CT0200 that is not a proper emu10k1 chip.

IF you have the latest alsa release then you can try the driver from http://www.opensound.com/osshw.html

i checked it is a real sound blaster live card and it is a seperate card. Also i installed fedora core 1 onto my computer and i don't understand how to unmute it. Sorry i am so confused with linux right now i have been using windows my whole life. thanks

Alsa is the default sound drivers used by most Linux distros.

If it is a true SB Live then it should be detected properly. You will need to have a mixer application installed. I recommend GNOME-ALSA-Mixer, from a console you could use alsamixer. Most likely you just have something muted or the volume turned down. Also check and see if you have the digital output enabled. If you have regular analog speaker that would also explain no sound.

Fedora Core 1 does not come with ALSA. The first Fedora distro that used alsa by default was fedora core 2. If you wanr to install alsa read this:

But if you can't detect your soundcard alsa won't make any difference

No need to apologize. We have all been there. Some of us, me mostly, longer than others.

I use alsa and my Sound Blaster works great. Install that software and it should work fine then.

Hope that gets it going. I love my sound thing in KDE. Make a noise whenever I do something.

i tried detecting it and this is what it said, "Error wile intitializing the sound driver: device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device) the sound server will continue, using the null output device" i know i have a sound card i can see it inside my computer and it is not attached to the motherboard. I am so confused

Have you installed the drivers, alsa? When you install the driver the device will be created for it to channel the sound to, /dev/dsp, which is the sound card. You can also do a "ls /dev | grep dsp" to see if it is there. Like this:

Not sure what adsp is, the dsp is what you want though. Basically install the software then try to use the card. It can't use it till it is installed.

Hang in there. I only use Linux and I still get confused from time to time. You should see me using windoze.

i tried the alsa drivers but fedora will say in the bar downloading but there is no actual window in view.

I have no clue on installing the drivers in Fedora. I actually built mine in the kernel but it appears it is not available in Fedora. Until you get that installed, no sound.

You may want to start a thread in the Fedora section, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...php?forumid=35 and see if you get better help since this is now specific to Fedora. You were in the right forum until we got to this point anyway. Someone there may can help you install the driver in a step by step way.

Since I'm a Gentoo user, no clue unless another Fedora user comes along. You may want to PM a moderator and see if they will move this thread then post again to bump it back to the top. That may work.

This is not true. Redhat/Fedora just used to use the OSS driver before they started using ALSA by default.

I don't really get what you mean. Did you follow the link's instruction? When did this happen?

I got that exact same error on FreeBSD, and I still can't figure it out.
