Sound configuration?

Hi everyone...
Has anyone been able to get the sound system to work in a situation similar to mine?
I have the infamous Rockwell sound card from an old HP.
I'm running Sarge with Linux 2.6.8 (I think)
I've been given a link where to find drivers, but I don't exactly know if the problem was that wasn't compatible with alsa or with kernel 2.6, but in the end it messed up everything and I had to reinstall everything again (just like windows)
Well if you can help I'd appreciate it! and remember I'm newbie to Linux and I haven't studied any computer related studies... ;-)
thanks in advance

I myself am quite new to Linux and I also use Debian (sarge). My sound card is a AC97. When I first installed Debian it worked fine, but today I decided to switch from Gnome to KDE. So I installed KDE and surprise...the sound card semmed not to work anymore (I must mention that previously I installed alsa).
The problem was after all, that the master channel was muted in the alsa mixer.
I didn't understand from your post if you have alsa installed or not, but if you don't I'd recommend you to install it (using either "apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils" or System->Synaptic Package Manager). After you get it installed it will ask you to run alsa-conf and then, just to make sure, run "alsamixer" and adjust the channels properly.

Hope this helped. Cheers.

Thanks!
Well yes, I have Alsa and everything installed. The problem is that the soundcard chipset is somewhat complicated (for what I understand) and there are no drivers available
I'm basically asking if someone could go around this limitations...
thank you anyway

I would try knoppix or a variation thereof and see if the card works there if not it will be a hard road
