Question sound configuration

I want my VIA AC97 built-in soundcard to work under Linux. Could someone show me how to get it running(detailed step-by-step process) ?

I also tried sndconfig, and successfully detected my sound card. But when the system tries to test it, a "segmentation fault" error appears. What can be wrong?
