PXE Boot using External NIC

I have two DEll computers. Both have intergrated NICs and support PXE boot.

I set up my laptop as a boot server and one of the boot clients loads the installer fine and everything runs smooth. The other, however, has a broken integrated network card, so it simply doesn't work. I have a non-integrated network card in it, but I have no idea how to get the PXE boot to utilize that card instead of the integrated one.

The machine that I'm having a problem with is a Dell Dimension 4550 and the BIOS version is A08 (Dell's website suggests it's the latest)

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

You should look at the 'README_PXE.TXT'.
Most of your questions are answered there.

I did - that's how I set up my boot server. It doesn't talk about using external NICs for network boot.

Hi,

What about the onboard, did you disable it? If so and the external as you call it should be able to pxe boot if it is capable. Most modern NICs are. Most modern BIOS allow you to select the device, be sure your NIC is configured. Some NICs do require setup via a vendor supplied utility.

The PCI NIC is Realtek 8139 and it supports PXE. The BIOS is was last updated in 2003, but I don't where I can pick the PCI NIC to boot from.
