A friend asked me to install Slack for him with GUI and Win Xp look and feel. (He is a newbie to Linux). There were no problems with the Slack installation. I installed kde 3.3 from /testing . Then I downloaded the kde-xp theme from kde-look.org and after extracting it I runned the installation scripts for the theme. However the theme doesn appear in the theme selection list in KDE and I don t
know what s wrong. I haven t installed any KDE themes on my own box so I don't have expirience with this. Can you help me?
I've had the same problem with some themes while using kde3.3, that's why I went back to 3.2.3. It may very well be that the theme just will not work with 3.3, but I could be wrong.
The last update which i downloaded is very fresh - 29.09.2004 and it claims that it supports kde > 3.2.
However if you can tell me where KDE stores configuration files for themes, the graphic files (pixmaps in this case) and so on it can be useful. If I know this I can try to manually fix this. Please abstract of the fact that this is an XP theme. It´s just the way he has to adapt to Linux and say ¨Goodbye Windows¨.
I know where is the KDE directory, but I asked for the location of the theme configuration files. It quite difficult to find out what is what.
However my friend feels comfortable with the Windows 98 theme with the default install and I don´t need to worry about the kde-xp theme. He likes KDE and he will soon register here and ask about any help he needs.
I found it difficult to install most of the themes on kde-look.org because many are distro-specific or depend on something else.
The install scripts are simple. They are copying some pixmaps to the kdestyle directory, some icons in /optkde/share/icons and the *.themerc(I don remember where.) I just noticed that the theme specific files must be in your home directory, somewhere in .kde
I think it´s too dificult for a normal user to install kde theme (currently no success for me). If, by chance the theme is visible from the menu, then KDE won´t allow me to choose IceWM window decoration and the theme, of course, won´t work as expected.
So, I´ll give up till somebody with expirience in this explain me how to do it.
