How would I connect to my WEP encrypted wireless network?

I recently swapped from ubuntu to slackware. It's all functioning, minus the wireless network. Decided to forgo my usual fluxbox desktop for the features in KDE until I get ready to swap back (not sure what programs I'll have to add to startup in flux yet). I'm using a toshiba satellite L305-S5957 with a Realtek 802.11b/g wireless-LAN adapter. Not sure if it's a hardware problem or if I just don't know how to connect with kde. Any help would be appreciated.

Can you see your wireless adapter with iwconfig? If yes then you only need to configure encription key..
It can be done with most wireless managers, but careful, installing wicd manager has ruined my ubuntu installation before

another responsible action is to disable encripting on wi-fi network

If you follow the instructions provided, the wicd package in /extra should not ruin your Slackware system.

Responsible?

I see under wlan0
Code:
IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Managed Acess Point: Not-Associated
Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry long limit: 7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
guessing this means I can connect to the network after I figure out how to configure the encryption code and connect. Any help on that point? I really have no clue what to do at this point.

As pointed out above, wicd is in /extra.

I run an open WLAN point now for over 2 years. Never a problem. Sometimes some guy logs in to check his mail on an iPod.

slackware has been using wicd clear back to 12.0 it was stable easy to use that is why it is part of slackware extra. It is a program that works well. It is not something that is absolutely need to connect so it will stay with extra.
Slackware staff has kept kept this program updated for the simplcicty of use and so we do not have to ansewer the same questions over and over for the last 8 years.
If you want to learn how to manual configure your /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf then go to the net slackware man pages.
if you just want to connect to the internet and configure your wifi card to connect. install wicd reboot.

Umm... what?

Frankly it's irresponsible to even run WEP... The MINIMUM level of security should be WPA.

I'm using wicd from /extra with my Toshiba NB200 netbook, running Slackware 13.1. It worked first time perfectly.

I had a customer who thought the same as you until the cops showed up with a search warrant because child porn was being transferred over his open WiFi. After major embarrassment of being arrested they were able to eventually ID a neighbor who was leeching off him................

An in-depth explanation about Slackware's network scripts and how to use them to connect to (open/wpa/wpa) networks is here: http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...ckware:network

Better to read Eric's link and do what it says.

As for me I just run these commands as root via a script: (NOTE: ath0 for my card, you need to use wlan0 etc.)

ifconfig ath0 down

iwconfig ath0 essid LINKSYS_WIFI
iwconfig ath0 ap 08:09:AA:BB:CC
iwconfig ath0 key 1234-5678-9ABC-DEF0-1234-66
iwconfig ath0 key on

ifconfig ath0 up
iwconfig (to check settings)
dhcpcd ath0 (uses dhcp to find an ip address)
