samba on college linux, cant resolve adress but CAN see files!!

have you restarted the windows box since changes were made? what users have you created? you need a samba user, and a windows user with the same name and password.

so you now have access to the linux machine from windows but not the other way around? what does smbclient -L return. are you running a firewall on the windows box?
tried...got the help or [usage][-?] thingy with lots of commands...-L doesnt exist i guess =), and no firewalls on windows...one fat antivirus is good enough for my computer to freak out...as soon as i master linux im getting rid of everyting m$ related!!

check the share permissions from the windows machine, each share needs to be configured for the user to access the files. you'll have to do that from windows.
i have already configured windows...but it seems i cannot access my /tmp again...anyway this is what i did: smb://my.ip.whateve/"SharedFILE" this "SharedFILE" did i need to put THAT in my smb.conf? if thats the story then this time has been in a complete waste =)

you don't need to put the windows share in your smb.conf. you should be able to connect to it through a browser if the permissions allow it. the user needs to have permission to the file.

right click the share to get a menu, sharing should be one of the options. choose that, a window will pop up showing the share name, there is a permisions button under the share name, hit that from that window you can control permissions to the share.
