Getting 0 screen message on boot up.

Im complete noob to linux! First time installing red hat. On a Dell Inspiron 5000e and I finally got it to install right.

Well when it reboots it goes through the whole load up prosses and won't boot into Windows X. It says 0 screens found. Somthing about Vert and Horz. Not right.

Any Idea on this one? Saw some where that RH has a problem with the video settings for this LCD screen.

Thx,
Doc

Welcome to the World of Linux!

Ok, the problem you are having is that the X windows system does not know what the refresh rates of your monitor is. This information is vital because your screen can be damaged should it be wrong.

So what you need to do is contact the manufacturer or check your manual and look for the horizontal and vertical refresh rates of your monitor.

Next, you need to edit a file: /etc/X11/XF86Config and add in your refresh rates, there should be a template for this in the file.

After that, save the config, and $ startx

Voila! (Hopefully)

I'm not an X guy by any means and even after years of using Linux, hate the thought of hackin away at XF86Config manually.

Therefore, I thought I'd point you in the direction of a tool called redhat-config-xfree86 in /usr/bin

Have fun,

Adam
