Can I Install Mandrake onto this Box?Hi

Hi

I have downloaded Mandrake 10.0 Official ISO files created CDs but before I proceed with an install I want to know if I can fit mandrake on the following box:

Intel Pentium II
256Mb
3 x 1.6Gb IDE HDD

Can I fit Mandrake onto these HDD's or will I need to purchase a bigger HDD?

Kind Regards,
Kazper.

you should get a fairkly slim install.
the installer however tends to see only / as the size of disks so if you install its likely it tells you you dont have enough room. If you put /usr on one disk /home on another and /root on the remaining it would be better.

you could even use the linux raid which is available in the setup and make a RAID 0 stripe of the whole lot.

I wouldn't use the new KDE3.2 on that kind of computer.. it's not the most lightweight desktops. Be sure to correct me if I'm totally wrong about this.

Thanks gowator, the RAID configuration sounds like the best use of the 3 x 1.6Gb IDEs. The raid you talk about is it an emulation of RAID specific to Linux. I ask because my experience with RAID has always been with dedicated RAID controllers.

You know it interesting that I am running into a potential issue with fitting Linux Mandrake onto my smaller drives.

Yet ironically I can get Win 98 SE with IE 6 SP1 and all current 98 SE patches onto one drive.

You should be okay, even though your disks are fairly small. Software RAID sounds good, but I can't remember if Mandrake's installer supports it.

I currently run mandrake on a PII 400MHz, 192MB ram system as my main desktop, but I have a 12 GB disk.

And just to note, KDE runs great on my machine.

Actually, the best question would be what do you plan on doing with that box? If you're going to use it as a router or firewall, or light server it's plenty powerful. But as a desktop you might be best off using a light WM like IceWM.

I'm writig this reply on P166, 48MB RAM, cca 1GB HD. Yes, all the figures are correct.
Mandrake 10, Blackbox 0.65 .
I use it to surf and code in C (I'm a math student). It takes him a bit longer to boot, but apart from that I have NO problems at all.

Basically just want to use it as a firewall router nothing more. Might dump the odd file across to it from time to time as a short term backup.

OK,
the installer prob is that it doesnt take into accunt the extra stuff on /usr if you give it a seperate parittion. You can (could) ignore if you knew you had room.

If you want a deidicated router/firewall Id suggest something else though!
I use SME server but others exist like clark connect.

My firewall router is SME 6.01 on a PII-266 with 64MB RAM.

Mandrake installer DOES allow you to create the RAID device.
SME server allows a RAID 1 install on two identical disks ... you could add the third later as a place to keep files....
