Question Move my Mandrake 9.1 Harddrive to a box with a Win2K install on another HD?

Ok, here's the issue. Apparently the capacitors on my MB are crapping out on me because my box reboots almost constantly and I can find no other problems that could be causing it. So, what I want to do until I get a new MB is take the harddrive currently booting my Mandrake 9.1 install (a 15Gb Quantum), and stick it in the same box with my Win2k (15Gb Quantum). Problem I need to resolve is how to get the MBR of the Win2k box to enable me to boot my Mandrake. This is kinda dual boot, but not from the same hard drive. Is this possible, does this paragraph make sense? AM I INSANE? (please don't answer that). Thanks for any and all help, advice and suggestions.

This is totally possible, in fact I have done it a few times.

It depends alot on how you are partitioned and what filesystems you are using but I'll give you the gist of it:

Repartition your Windows box to make room for Mandrake.
Boot something like Knoppix and format the new Mdk part with whatever you want, something like:

mkfs.ext3 /dev/hda2 or whatever your partition/filesystem choices are.

Then take the disc out of your mdk box and stick it in with the Windows machine.

Again in knoppix mount the new mdk partition that's on your win drive (make sure it doesn't mount it as read only) and the old mdk partition.

cd to the old mdk partition and then
cp -ax * /mnt/new_mandrake_mountpoint

Then you'll need to edit the lilo.conf on the new copy of mandrake that's now on the same disk as your windows install (make sure you include an entry to boot windows too).

Then
chroot /mnt/new_mdk_mountpoint /bin/bash
lilo

This'll install LILO on your Windows disks MBR.

That's it.

I'm sure you'll have more questions but this should get your started.

You should be able to simply install the HD as a 2nd or slave to the first; insert your Mandrake Install CD #1; hit F1 at the prompt; type "rescue"; and then follow the prompts to reinstall the bootloader.

Or, if that doesn't work; just go through the install as an "upgrade" and set it up that way.

...at least this is what I would do.
