xsane only works as root

After hours at the console I finally have my canoscan n656u working, but only as root. I have checked permissions and usrs have read and execute permission for scanimage, and /dev/usbscanner. I can open xsane as user but it refuses to find my scanner. what am I forgetting? thanks in advance for any help
