Xine-ui crashes on CDs

I recently got around to installing xine-ui, and so far all I have really tried to do with it is play cds. However, when I hit the cd button, xine mysteriously exits. When running from the command line, I get the following output, which really doesn't say much.

Is there any "verbose" or "debug" command-line options for Xine? Do a "man xine", try it (if it exists,I hope so!!) and see if it gives a less cryptic error message.

Can other applications read the CDs?

This is the tail end of verbose=2, there are about 30 pages of it, but i figured the end is all that really matters. the osd: can't find local character set is what my gut says the problem is, though I'm probably wrong.
