Question Xine crashes on startup - looking for a network?

I've recently installed Debian on my laptop from the KNOPPIX CD, but I can't get Xine to work. As soon as I start it up, it crashes.
Running the Xine UI from the caommand prompt, I get an error along the lines of: the network has not been configured correctly.
But I don't connect to a network through this laptop, or the Internet for that matter... How can I tell Xine that there IS no network?
Or should I just go with MPlayer or something else?
