Newsbin
Thumbsplus (I hate acdsee)
and a few 3d apps
and of course Photoshop
Newgroups are great places to get textures for 3d objects and Thumbs Plus allows me to have a dozen different windows open to compare and choose.
I also use Photoshop and a few plugs to work on my textures. Gimp is great, especially for free and GIMP 2 is a big improvment but I love Photoshop. GIMP would probably be better after I got used to it but it has lots of quirks I don't like about it. I don't like the way everything is organized in it either.
I also couldn't live without my plugins and adding Plugins to GIMP is a headache

Check out BNR2 for your (binary) newsgroups on Linux! BNR2, aka Binary News Reaper, is a GREAT app for this. It even supports NZB files now, so getting what you want is easy! Check it out here: http://www.bnr2.org/
If you choose to use windows, I switched from Newsbin Pro to Newsleecher, because of the abundance of features!!! Anyways, BNR2 rocks on the Linux platform so just "emerge bnr2" is you are using Gentoo and it will be installed in less than a few minutes...
Photoshop! gimp is only so good
i keep a winxp partition just for it (ok and the d3d games!)
also virtualdub an great, simple frame by frame video editor

Probably you know it already, but actually Photoshop works quite well under Crossover (and I haven't tried Crossover 3 yet)
The price of Crossover is quite reasonable now, IMO.
