Proftd freezing on ls command

I can login ok but proftpd is freezing on me when i do the ls or dir command.

It works perfect from localhost but when i connect from another computer it does nothing.

Syslog shows:

Apr 18 14:18:24 localhost proftpd[31051]: localhost.localdomain (193.120.148.177[193.120.*.*]) - FTP session opened.
Apr 18 14:18:37 localhost proftpd[31051]: localhost.localdomain (193.120.*.*[193.*.*]) - mod_delay/0.4: delaying for 221 usecs

windows client (ftp command) shows
open mywebsite.org
Connected to nmywebsite.org
220 Proftpd 1.2.10 Server (debian) [192.168.1.4]
user {mywebsite.org:{none)): user_name
331 Password required for user_name
Password:
230 User johnscottus logged in.
ftp> ls or dir
(then hangs)
200 Port Command successfully
Aborting any active data connections...

It freezes using other clients also.

Hi,

This looks like a passive vs active FTP problem. Try setting up a passive connection. If your client doesn't have this as an option try the passive command once you are logged on.

I.e:

.
.
331 Password required for user_name
Password:
230 User johnscottus logged in.
ftp> passive
.
.

Hope this helps.

if you want to prevent typing "passive" every time, go to your vsftpd.conf and add the line "pasv_enable=NO"

this will disable the passive command and deny any attempt to use it.

if you then want to get access, use a program that can disable passive. (like ftpx), strangely, internet explorer has an option to turn of passive, thus giving you a preinstalled ftp-browser for local use.
any linux distro should have a decent ftp-client, like gftp or sutch.

just don't EVER get a file using windows "cmd-ftp", your file WILL be corrupt.

Hi

@shorun: The OP has proftpd, not vsftpd

well, in that case, get vsftpd :P

i've tryed proftpd frequently, i've got my reasons NOT to use it :P

but anyway, either you turn of passive every time you connect to your ftp server, or you get yourselve a vsftpd server, where you can turn passive of
or you fix your passive ports.

was there not an option to set the passive ports staticly?
if so, you can route the ports, since you know what to use.
