freezing

when i boot into some kernels (ie installers) the keyboard will freeze. I start hitting the caps locks off and on as it loaded the install to see exactly where it happened, and well, it happens at the very beginning almost as soon as hte kernel begins to load.

what could be causing this to happen?

Is it a USB keyboard? Maybe there is some problem loading the USB module. (Just a wild guess). I have one box that freezes on boot, for some reason, if the USB cable modem is plugged in. Works fine if I unplug, then plug it back in after boot gets going.

well the problem only happens with me on pre-compiled kernels (ie the ones that boot with installation)

I had to unplug the mouse to use it

or you could use one of those usb to ps2 converters
