how do youn install facebook chat pidgin plugin in debian

a friend of mine is running debian and for some reason we are getting errors when we try to use the deb package on its google code page
were there like some dependancies that we need to install first before doing it through the use of a deb package

we already ran
Code:
aptitude build-essential
so what else is there

It's in the testing and unstable repos.

If your friend is running stable you can try to backport it.
Download the dsc, orig.tar.dz and debian.tar.gz from http://packages.debian.org/sid/pidgin-facebookchat
Then build the binary package from the source package as usual (ie same way as you would do it in ubuntu).

Package pidgin-facebookchat

* squeeze (testing) (net): Facebook Chat plugin for Pidgin
1.67.1-1: amd64 armel hppa i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
* sid (unstable) (net): Facebook Chat plugin for Pidgin
1.67.1-1: alpha amd64 armel hppa hurd-i386 i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
1.60-1.1 [debports]: m68k

As evo2 already pointed out you can try to backport it yourself.

How do I backport a sid package to testing or stable?
Install the Debian source (and the development tools, especially debhelper), and then build the package. Step by step:

add a deb-src line for sid to your sources.list
apt-get update
apt-get build-dep packagename
apt-get -b source packagename
the resulting debs should be in the current directory, install using dpkg -i

Or you can upgrade to Squeeze.

Or dump pidgin and use irssi or weechat with bitlbee.
