Howto get newer package versions for Debian Stable

So you want/need a newer version of a package than what is currently in Stable, what do you do.
First look in the backports repo located at http://backports.debian.org/

Once you find what you are looking for you need the backports repo in your sources.list.

Add the backports repo to your sources.list

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
that will open your sources.list in nano so you can add:

deb http://backports.debian.org/debian-backports

If you are really worried about privacy there are a few things you can do including:
Use the Adblock Plus extension for Firefox and use the
Easy Privacy list as well as the Antisocial list.
This list blocks the ever increasing social networking content on third-party sites.

Trouble shooting ALSA on Debian

First go through the ALSA checklist:
1) add yourself to the 'audio' group (log out and log in again) , as root add username audio, where username is your user's name
2) use alsamixer and unmute channels and raise levels (also try muting some channels & toggle jack sense)

--$ alsamixer <Enter> {You will be able to control the volumes and balance through the keyboard.}

For KDE
Press: Alt+F2
Then type: /usr/bin/kmix {Click 'Run'.}...
