There seem to be various problems
First:
What is your broadband modem exactly?
I mean that we need to know of that what you have installed is a modem or a router. Indicating which brand it is could help, but as there are lots of hardware which can be both, modem and router what we need to know is the way your hardware is connected to ypur computer:
- if it's USB it's a modem
- if it's a LAN-card it's a router
If you are using and USB connection to your modem you will need the PPPoE module. As you don't tell us which version of Red Had you installed I would figure out it's an old one, as the new Fedora and the last Red Hats discovers broadband modems by themselves.
If this is your acse I would strongly suggest to download a more modern distributon, specially recommending
Kubuntu or
SUSE
with either of both you will have no complaints from your hardware.
Here in
this thread by ruudra you can find more info on ADSL Modems.
But as I understand that your computer is connected to the ADSL hardware via an ethernet card I will suppose that your hardware is functioning as a
router.
Router are dead easy to configure and you already did the first part.
You have an IP on your PC and know the one of the router (192.168.1.1, this is standard).
The fact is that these routers are configured by default so that they use 192.168.0.2 or 192.168.1.2 as your PC's IP address.
The good thing is that you can setup everything on your modem/router via a web server which runs in the router itself. to access it and configure stuff the only thing you need is to open a browser and type this URL:
That's all, if your TCP/IP is correctly set up you will find yourself browsing a web interface from where you can tweak most of the settings.
What you need to get internet access is to either changing the IP of the card you are using to connect to your router (from Linux) or from inside of this web interface give 192.168.0.3 permissions to access the router. Normally this will only mean adding this IP to your routers config using a web formulary.
Try this latter first and if you still have problems post again in this thread (many of us will get an automatic email so that we will be aware). In this post please indicate the following:
- Linux distribution
- kernel you are running [ uname -a ]
- brand and type of you ADSL modem/router
This will be enough.
Regards and good luck
