Configuring ADSL


Hi

I am using SuSE 9.3 and hope someone will help me to configure my new ADSL connection. It is setup like this:
Telephone jack -> ADSL Modem (SmartAX MT880) -> Ethernet (Accton NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100)

ADSL is configured like this:

PPP Mode: PPP over Ethernet
Device Activation: Manually

Connection Parameters:
Dial on Demand: FALSE
Modify DNS when connected: TRUE
Automatically Retrieve DNS: TRUE
IP Address Settings
Local IP Address of your Machine: 192.168.1.100
Remote IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Default Route: TRUE

I have setup the network card (through yast) like this:

Please note that I can reach configuration page of ADSL at 192.168.1.1, so perhaps my network configuration is right. Also it works fine on Win XP.

Looks OK except for your hostname and password.

Check these and ensure you have the right case.

If you saying it works under Windoze and it is external I would tend to blame these.

If it doesn't work with Windoze then:

I assume you have the framing and other adsl parameters correct in your setup.
Since, I do not know which country and provider you should check with them for the correct
LLB/VC Mux, Protocol, pppoE or PPP oA, AAL5 encapsulation, ATM/VCI
These differ between nations and providers. Check these with your provider these facts are not usually in the data sheet with your router/modem.

I have now changed ADSL connection settings to autogenerate IP address and now KInternet log looks like this:

(PS: My eth. card is - Accton NC100 Network Everywhere Fast Ethernet 10/100; and connection is working in Win XP)

What is MTU/MRU above? I have no idea what may be the problem as I have no experience in networking.

I don't understand why you disconnect at all if it works on Windoze switching to the Linux should not need rebooting. You said you had a router these are external units.

To save time this is an external isn't it?

If it is an internal then does it work with Linux? Say what it is exactly described as. I expect your trying to get help on a dumb adsl chipset and it isn't even a router.
I expect you do not have the appropriate driver if SuSE didn't load the driver.

If you have bought one of these cards then throw it away and buy a proper router these do not disconnect when you switch of the PC or change operating systems.

The SmartAX MT880 *IS* an ADSL router.

What go over what barrythai said, its the adsl router itself that dials the connection and authenticates. Point a browser to the IP address of your router to access the config tools. All you then need to do is set the gateway address on your linux box to the ip address of the router.

I had Mandrake 10.1 CD unused, so i decided to install it along suse 9.3 to check if it works, and to my surprise the connection is working without me having to type-in a single letter! And i am now writing this post from Mandrake 10.1.

Now i just wish it connects even with SuSE and I hope i will be able to.

Will come back soon.

Your right and he shouldn't need to do any of this. Once his router is switched on and connected this Kinternet is a red herring and he shouldn't be using this at all.

His connection to the router is through his ethernet card and he should be configuring through the LAN.

He should not be using K internet at all.

Suse doesn't need this at all and generally connects on installation to the ethernet and the router.

All he needs to use YAST network and reconfigure LAN.

His router should be left on, or rebooted.

his ifconfig is correct and he is connected to the router.

if he types route it most probably does not have the gateway UG entry

It could be the router is not set up for DHCP requests and so does not have his gateway setup.

Thanks 4 your reply, but i need a little more help. I have configured my ADSL modem to connect directly to internet. In the process i removed ADSL connection from suse.

Then, i configured lan card for suse with gateway 192.168.1.1 and DNS also as 192.168.1.1, but still i cannot access the internet.

Here is route -n (SuSE):

Then i configured ADSL modem with DHCP and also configured SuSE and Mandrake accordingly without any success

I have double checked that the modem is actually connected to the Internet.

Is host name of my computer is important.

Hi

I finally managed to connect to the Internet with SuSE 9.3 Pro with router configured to do the dial-up process. (In the process i have misconfigured my Win XP which now says that any address that i typed is illegal, though i can do ping)
If you believe me i changed the following (SuSE 9.3):
In /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth-id-00:00:e8:11:11:14
Changed NETWORK='192.168.1.0' with NETWORK='192.168.1.1'
and a reboot. I don't know if above has any significance or not but i am accessing Internet now.

Output of ifconfig and route remains same as in my previous post.
