Resolution set @ terminal

I'll explain my situation shortly.

My 19inch monitor just broke down and I now use a spare 17incher. But X window still starts in a resolution which only my 19inch supports, so when I want to start it, my monitor shuts down, and I'm pretty stuck

How can I adjust my monitor settings from the terminal so that I can get in X windows again?

that will bring up the things that you will have to adjust. take your time and make sure that you know what your vert/horz refresh rates are and what resolution is supported with your monitor.

cheers.
