Terminal window resolution better than 80x24?

I've heard that there's a way to set the terminal to a higher resolution the 80x24 using SVGATextMode but that's not in the Red Hat 9 distribution. Is there another method to bump up the number of characters on the screen?

Thanks.

I guess your talking about the framebuffer. I use vga=0x318 in my lilo.conf file and that gives me a console with 24 bit color and 1024x768 resolution. The standard Redhat kernel has framebuffer support. Here is the howto:

Thanks, guys! That did it.

I did some experimenting and each character is 8px x 16px . When I use the following modes, $COLUMNS x $LINES were:

640 x 400 = 80 x 25
640 x 480 = 80 x 30
800 x 600 = 100 x 37
1024 x 768 = 128 x 48
1280 x 1024 = 160 x 64
1600 x 1200 = 200 x 75

Some of the modes didn't work on some of my computers. When it failed it provided a list of alternatives:

F00 80 X 25
F01 80 X 50
F02 80 X 43
F03 80 X 28
F05 80 X 30
F06 80 X 34
F07 80 X 60
F09 132 X 25
F0A 132 X 43
F0B 132 X 50
F0C 132 X 60
100 40 X 25
154 132 X 43
155 132 X 25
164 132 X 60
165 132 X 50
120 132 X 25
121 132 X 43
122 132 X 50
123 132 X 60

(These probably need to be prefaced by 0x as well....)

Thanks again.

Oh, one more question. Is there a way to tell the kernel to change the resolution after boot? Say I want to temporarily change from 128 x 48 to 80 x 25, is there a command I can use to change it to 0x300 until I log out?

Thanks,
-Dan

set vga=blah in the options for your bootloader and it'll be fine.
