proftpd help

ok i got proftpd working... i made accounts and everything everything seemed to be working fine. but then randomly an account won't work... it seems I have to chown the group and user to the ftp directory every time i login or even more often than that or the accounts will say 'invalid password'. i'm running mandrake 9.1
i don't want to have to chown every user and the group like every 10 minutes. what can i do?
also.... that will APPEAR to have fixed the problem, after like chowning the group to the directory and all that, itwill let the account log in.... then not 5 minutes later just now i tried logging in again and it says password invalid. what's going on?????

i just did all the chown commands about 5-10 minutes ago... i got all the accounts working and everything RIGHT after doing that... I haven't done anything since, and i just tried logging in again... and only one of the accounts works.
all these accounts are in the same group, and i'm typing the exact same command for all of them.

chown user.group /home/ftp

and that is what got them all workign all of the sudden, to onlynot work 5 mins later. can anyone help?
