Problem installing Linux Mint 9

Trying to install Linux Mint 9 from a live CD. The mdsum is OK and the cd contents look fine. When trying to boot from the cd I get the boot menu screen but choosing either start Linux Mint or trying to start in compatiblity mode just results in a black screen with the word 'Loading' and then nothing further. The computer is a Dell Optiplex 755 with an Intel Duo CP E6750 and 2 GB of RAM.

Burn it to another disk and see if that fixes it

I had tried that, including burning at a lower speed, but no difference

I was hoping you wouldn't say that. Okay, so the disk is alright, that only leads the computer; and this is generally means something really wrong.

Hopefully its only a Mint issue; are you able to try a different distro to rule this out?
