Installing Programs, How do I do that in Linux Mint?

I am trying to install programs in linux mint 6 xfce, and it gives me a tag gz file, but when i extract it or open it, there is a bunch of different files. How do I install programs, such as opera?

First, always try the package manager first.

If something is not available in the package manager, then there can be various different procedures. I don't know what you mean by a "tag gz" file----common formats are .tar.gz or maybe .tgz -----
Regardless, once you extract (tar -xzvf for a .tar.gz), there is generally some kind of README file with further instructions.

In your menus--I'm pretty sure Mint uses Synaptic.

A package manager takes care of installing common sofware--including finding and downloading all the required libraries. (Called "dependencies" in the Linux world.)

I have that, and I found it has opera web borwser, thanks. Now all I do is download tar.gz zip stuff, and it should show up in synaptic package manager? Assuming of course the package is a repo supported by my distro?

Strange, I installed opera.. but where is it?

Probably in /usr/bin. You could do a 'whereis opera' in terminal.
