mute button on keyboard is orange and there is no sound
i am very new to linux so be gentle. i have a hp compaq nc6220 laptop running linux mint 9 isadora. the problem is the mute button on the keyboard is orange and i have no sound at all. the volume icon at the bottom is not muted. please help.
there are modules (drivers) specially for various laptops in order to support the laptopspecific hardware like the functional keys or batterymanagement.
Could you please open a terminal and execute the command
Code:
lsmod | sort
and post the output here? And please post also the output of
uname -a
Linux tech-laptop 2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:10:02 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
this laptop was bought on ebay for my parents and the username has not been changed. i don't know how to do that?? Does that make a difference? thanks for your help.
i have gone in and out and reset this sooo many times. after leaving the laptop on thru the night...there is no sound at all this morning. i checked the sound first this morning and then went into alsamixer...everything was still like it was before i went to bed, only there was no sound. thanks for your help.
nothing happened when i executed sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel it just went back to the $prompt. Is that ok?
Yes, then the module has been loaded.
After restarting the system, you will have to use the modprobe command again in order to load this module. Please try if this changed something with your audio.
If not, please try the command
Code:
sudo alsaconf
, this configures your soundcard (though I'd guess that with Mint this is done automatically).
If the module works, you'll need to configure your system to load this module at startup, please read the documentation.
restarted the computer; ran sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel and still had to execute alsamixer and unmute the master tab only and then i had sound; executed command sudo alsaconf and received message sudo: alsaconf: command not found.
Well, if it is working now, you'll have to configure the module snd_hda_intel to be loaded at systemstart.
Anywhere in the /etc directory, there is a file "modprobe.conf" there you'll have to add "snd_hda_intel". This will load the module automatically when the system starts.
Well, but the module is loaded, again one step further
I had this problem with alsamixer once, but I did not find a solution back then. I'd recommend to start a new thread for this issue. Or use the search-funktion here in the forums, maybe you'll find a solution there.
