Mandrake 9.1 on laptop plays CDs but can barely hear it

newbie here - recently installed mandrake 9.1 on my old laptop. using the cd player that comes with gnome, i can play cds. however, only a tiny amount of sound can be heard...even with the cd player at full volume.

i opened the 'volume control' app and cranked all the volumes and the sound went up a tad, but it is still very quiet...

any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with Mandrake's setup, but I had the same problem last night on Vector Linux (Slackware based).

I fixed it by running 'aumix' and setting the sliders (on the left side of the window) to about 85% . Too easy ...
