Routing problems???

I just upgraded Redhat 7.3 to Redhat 8.0 last night and now my box is having issues getting (and staying) on the Internet.

Here is what happens (bear with me, this stuff (routing) is new to me):

- Box boots up, 2 nics (eth0 - public, eth1 - private) activated.
- Try to ping a public site, the ping reports that it is using the private nic to communicate.
- Obviously get an unreachable error. (Sorry, I don't have a screen shot of what exactly happened).
- Ifdown eth0 and eth1
- Ifup eth0
- Internet works fine.
- Ifup eth1
- Nothing works
- Ifdown eth1
- Try to reach Internet (ping, web). "No network" type errors.
- Ifdown eth0
- Ifup eth0
- Internet works fine.

The firewall I use (iptables - gShield) is turned off during all of this. As far as I can tell, the RH firewall is off too. I'm not too sure though because in the settings listed in Gnome, I set it to "no firewall" every time, but when I open the config window again, it says that it is at high.

Reboots do not fix the problem. If I boot with only eth0 activated a boot, the above still happens. I have access to the internet until I enable eth1.

Since I'm running NAT for my private network, I kinda need to have eth1 up...

How do I tell RH8 to use the public nic for Internet requests when the two cards are active?

1st off, I suggest you avoid doing "upgrades" with RH distros. I have had nothing but problems doing so. A clean install is the way to go. Back up your conf files, important scripts, and other files. Install 8.0 clean and you shouldn't have too much trouble. What kind of NIC's are you using?

About the NICS:
2 Linksys Cards.
LNE100TX I think are the models. Revision 4.

About the Upgrades:
I wanted to see what would happen. (I found out alright...) But seriously, I read a little while back that Redhat installers would just format all mounted drives on the system. Since I have 6 drives mounted that cannot be formatted, and physically removing them from my computer is a pain, I wanted to do the upgrade...

Do you know if that would happen if I just reinstalled with a full install (using RH8 obviously)?

During install, RH gives you partition options. If you select automatic partition and "remove linux partitions" it will. If you have partitions you want left alone, I suggest you manually partition during install or once you have backed up your important files, using fdiak or PM remove the partitions you want to use for Linux, making them unpartitioned space. Then start the installation and choose "Install Linux in unpartitioned space". That way it won't affect your other partitions. RH 8 rules. Your Linksys cards should not be a problem. Occasionally I have heard that Linux doesn't like having two of the same card installed but I have two netgear fa312's in mine with no trouble.

Well, reinstalling from scratch fixed it, as expected...

weird I've been upgrading redhat installs since 6.2, that's a long time ago and never once had a problem. go figure

It would have been nice if I could have changed information in a file or something, instead of doing a full reinstall, but as long as I got a working system, it does not bother me either way...
