linux routing problems

I have a linux system with 2 Nics (realtek 8137's I think), but can't get routing and network correct.
I basically want to use the system as a firewall and router and followed the instructions for Firestarter and Guarddog/guidedog setups.
Also tried several linux distros - Mepis/Lycoris/Fedora, but all seem to experience the same problem :-

If ETH0 enable only (always dhcp) then can access internet from linux box.
If ETH1 then enabled, internet stops working from linux box but can soemtimes ping windows clients connected to this.
If ETH1 enabled only, then can always ping windows clients.

Did notice in my last linux installation (Fedora core1) that when both network cards are enabled, the ping command always tries via ETH1 (fixed IP address), the other linux distros didn't show me this detail. Could this be a pointer to the problem. How do I force the browser to use ETH0 Always.

P.S Seem to have the same problem even if Firestarter or Guidedog is enabled.

Any help or pointer would be appreciated.

enable both cards and show us the output from these 2 commands:

1. route

2. iptables -t nat -nvL

run both as root
