Resolving a hostname from it's ip?

I know this may be a weird question but i used 'ping -a' (resolve a hostname from ip address) a lot in windows and thought it will have the same effect on linux but it doesnt, does anyone know a worthy substitute?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

you can use
/usr/bin/host

or nslookup
nslookup is a bit deprecated but still exists. It also exists on Windows

dig is the replacement for nslookup.
To do a reverse query use the key x.

dig -x ipaddr will query the default nameserver for your system. dig @nameserver-ip will query the specified nameserver.

regards,
