I've been browsing the google and these forums, and I have found a lot of questions about chaning the hostname, which I have followed to a T.
Heres my situation: I'm setting up a server for the first time, and I am going to do all the work remotely. To do this I will need to change the hostname, so I can access it on my dynamic network. I am running RH9, and made the appropriate changes. It appears that the hostname is helios (thats the server name).
The network I am on uses a dynamic dns, so I should be able to access the server by helios.resnet.nmu.edu, but this is not working.
A windows box can be accessed by computername.resnet.nmu.edu. Is this something different than the hostname?
I'll be hitting the refresh. I am just about stuck.
thanks - eric
have u changed the host name in /etc/sysconfig/network??
what is the zone file u have created in /etc/named.conf???
what is the appropriate file u have created in /var/named?? (check if the entries are correct)
have u given ur system's IP as the gateway in /etc/resolv.conf??
have u given the name in search in /etc/resolv.conf??(if u have doughts just remove the line)
if all the entries are correct just restart the server and check the log message if u have got every thing rite using "tail -v /var/log/messeges"
if this is ok then check if u can get the host resolved in your local system using
"host FULLY-QUALLIFIED-DOMAIN-NAME"(FULLY-QUALLIFIED-DOMAIN-NAME should be replaced with your own F-Q-D-N)
if every thing is ok then try giving "iptables -F"
then try to access the host from other host in the network.
hope this should solve the issue.else update hear or mail me with all file configuration details.
I guess I can re-phrase my question to make it a little easier.
In Windows, the computer name can be used to access the machine on the network, such as computername.resnet.nmu.edu.
Is there an equivilent to the "computer name" for linux RH9? I have already changed the hostname.
I think I figured it out. I was making all the changes via command line, yet I was in gnome. It turns out when RH started, it used its config and over wrote my modified ones because I did not check the profile for the device.
