When I boot my computer the wifi does not connect and when I click the link in 'network connections' I get a link to Unlock the Keyring.

Your desktop environment wants you to store your wireless password in the keyring, which is sort of an encrypted password vault local to that computer and which is password protected on the local computer.
Your user agent icon says Ubuntu. Could you tell us specifically what distro/version and what desktop environment you are using? (The user agent icons for many Ubuntu derivatives, not just for Ubuntu, say "Ubuntu.")
As an aside, as I use KeePassX for my passwords, a desktop environment that attempts to kidnap me into using a keyring most certainly motivates me to explore new realms in profanity.
