Unhappy ManDrake 10.1 CDROM Access Error / WIreless Error

Okay....I have tried 5 different flavors of Linux and not one of the distributions have yet to get what I consider to be the very basic requirements for the average end user working.

1)Cannot access the DVD/CDRW correctly in Mandrake 10.1

Error I get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
or too many mounted file systems
Please check that the disk is entered correctly.

Whats up with this? I have logged in as ROOT and made changes in the FSTAB file etc etc etc...it still fails. I have never faced this error in any other Linux Distribution.

2)Cannot get the wireless card working correctly.

atheros chipset

I have downloaded Ndiswrapper etc////followed the insructions...still no success.

Okay as far as instructions...I think some of you Linux Guru's write intructions for people that are at your same level....like saying....make sure there is a LINK to the original code in the modules folder.....yeah okay....I have only used windows....all my life...and started trying to use Linux in the last 3 months...how do I make sure there is a link where/what and how do I do that?

When I run Make install with ndiswrapper I always got error codes saying gcc or some other file is not avail...I install it and then another error code for another file....whats up with this?

Look sorry if I am bit frustrated...but can you people see why Linux is so far off from taking a huge market share from Windows? And when ever a person asks for instruction...not hand holding but actual instructions that a newbie can easily understand...its impossible.

If anyone can help me...I shall appreciate it I assure you....if not....all I can say is the advance LinuX users of this world are letting their so called cause down...by not doing all they can to promote the adoption of Linux by Windows Users.

1. is a little weird, what kind of CD do you have in the drive?

2. Ndiswrapper is kind of the wrong tool for the job. Its a driver that creates a wrapper between the linux kernel and a windows driver. Its a good last resort for those unfortuantely saddled with wireless cards that were produced by companies that refuse to release specs enough for there to be a native driver...(cough, damn broadcom): Atheros, however... does have a Linux driver.

Usually you can only grab a snapshot of the code off of CVS from sourceforge, but that's a hastle to explain to anyone, here's a snapshot:

http://madwifi.otaku42.de/madwifi-cvs-current.tar.bz2

Here's the page on it:

http://madwifi.sourceforge.net/

Now, you have to have your kernel source onboard. Check to see that there's a directory's worth of stuff in /usr/src/linux, if not... under Mandrake... whew... luckily I did this last week

The Startbarry-thingy -> Computer Management? -> package management? -> and then you want to search for "kernel" and it should prompt you for one of the CDs... 3 offhand if 10.1 is like 10.0.

Post back when you get stuck.

Cheers,

Finegan
