Angry CDROM Read or access error...

I am having trouble playing audio cd's on a new install of Linux Mandrake 8.1.
I get the following error message:
"CDROM read or access error (or no audio disc in drive). Please make sure you have access permissions to /dev/cdrom."

If i run: ls -l /dev/cdrom I get the following results: lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 16 Feb 21 10:35 /dev/cdrom(flashing red) -> ../cdroms/cdrom0(flashing red)

This was not a problem under Red Hat...

Thank you for your help!

The red flash thing means a broken link. You need to remove /dev/cdrom and then recreate the link to the device, do "rm /dev/cdrom && ln -s /dev/hd# /dev/cdrom" , replace # with the correct letter for your cd-rom.

Do data CDs work?

The flashing red indicates either a broken symlink or the fact that you don't have permission to the symlink's target. Make sure that /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 exists. You'll probably find that it is a symlink also, pointing to the location of your drive (usually /dev/hdc). If that's not the right location, delete the link and create a correct one.
